Struve V.Y., (1793-1863), astronomer

STRUVE Vasily Yakovlevich (Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von) (1793-1864, St. Petersburg), astronomer and land-surveyor, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1832). A native from Germany, he graduated from the University of Derpt in 1810. In 1839, he came to St. Petersburg. He was a founding director of the Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory (1839-62), which conducted astronomical observations of a world class level. His works focus on the problems of fundamental and applied astronomy and the study of astronomical instruments. Struve also performed a survey in the European part of Russia. In the 1840s, he determined the exact longitude of Pulkovo Observatory (see Pulkovo Meridian). He was buried at the cemetery attached to the Pulkovo Observatory.
