Famintsyn A.S., (1835-1918), botanist

FAMINTSYN Andrey Sergeevich (1835-1918), plant physiologist, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1884) and the Russian Academy of Sciences (1917). In 1857 he graduated from the University of St. Petersburg, where he held the professorship from 1867 to 1889. A founding director of the Laboratory of Plant Anatomy and Physiology (1890) (currently the Timiryazev Institute for Plant Physiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences). Together with V.I. Vernadsky, Famintsyn launched the Commission upon the Study of Russian Natural Productive Resources. In 1915, he was elected honorary president of the Russian Botanical Society. His major works dwell on the issues of photosynthesis and plant metabolism. He was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox cemetery. The house, where Famintsyn lived (1/2 Leitenanta Shmidta Embankment), bears a memorial plaque.
