Euler L., (1707-1783), mathematician

EULER Leonard (1707-83), mathematician, mechanical engineer, and physicist. A native of Switzerland, he studied at Basel University. Invited to the Petersburg Academy of Sciences, where he worked as a scientific assistant from 1726. A member of the Academy in 1731-41 and from 1766, and a foreign honorary member in 1742-66. He worked in Berlin in 1741-66. Notable for his extraordinary breadth of interests and creative ability, Euler wrote over 800 works on mathematical analysis, differential geometry, number theory, calculus of approximations, celestial mechanics, mathematical physics, optics, ballistics, shipbuilding, music theory, etc. He was buried at the Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery, with a monument erected on his grave by the Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1837, and reburied at the St. Lazarus Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Lavra in 1956. There is a memorial plaque at 15 Lieutenant Shmidt Embankment where he lived in 1766-83.
