Bernoulli D. (1700-1782), Physicist

BERNOULLI, Daniel (1700-1782) mathematician, Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1725-33). Born into a family of Swiss scientists. His brother Nicolaus and his nephew Jacob were also members of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Bernoulli graduated from Basel University. He studied medicine in Heidelberg and in Strasbourg. He became a Member of the Bologna Academy of Sciences. Bernoulli was invited to St. Petersburg in 1725 at the time of the opening of the Academy of Sciences. He went back to Basel in 1733, remaining a foreign honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He published works on algebra, probability theory, theory of series, and Bernoulli's hydrodynamic equations.
