AYNALOV Dmitry Vlasievich (1862–1939, Leningrad), art historian, corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1914), Russian Academy of Sciences (1918) and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925). Studied in Novorossiysk University in Odessa under N.P. Kondakov. Held a professorship at the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University (1903–17, 1921–36). Aynalov was a founding member of the Society of Artists of Rus Revival (1915) and member of the Presidium of the Union of Art Workers (1917). In his works on Byzantine and Old Russian Art, he was the first in Russian art theory to provide analyses of cultural evolution and succession of artistic traditions of various epochs: Hellenistic Origins of Byzantine Art (St. Petersburg, 1900), Byzantine Paintings of the 14th Century (St. Petersburg, 1917), The History of Russian Painting from the 16th Century to the End of the 19th Century (1908, reprinted in St. Petersburg, 2000), and The History of Russian Monumental Art (1917). His last fundamental work was Essays on Leonardo da Vinci (1939). In 1903–17, Aynalov lived at 46 Eleventh Line of Vasilievsky Island, in the 1930s – at 34 Fontanka River Embankment. Buried at Literatorskie Mostki.
