Categories / Science. Education/Personalia

BAKHTIN Mikhail Mikhailovich (1895-1975), philosopher, philologist. In 1913-16, he attended lectures in Novorossiysk University (Odessa); in 1916-18, continued his studies at Petrograd University. Along with N.M. Bakhtin, M.I. Lopatto, L.V Pumpyansky, N.E. Radlov and S.E. Radlov, he took part in the Omphalos circle and attended meetings of the Religious Philosophical Society. In 1918, Bakhtin moved to Nevel and returned to Leningrad in May of 1924. Bakhtin gave lectures and reports on philosophical and literary subjects at home meetings, which included lectures for the Circle of Nevel Philosophical School (Pumpyansky, M.V. Yudina, V.N. Voloshinov, P.N. Medvedev, I.I. Kanaev, M.I. Tubyansky, and K.K. Vaginov). Bakhtin definitely took part in writing books published under the names of Voloshinov and Medvedev (Freudism, 1927; Formalistic Method In Literary Criticism, 1928; Marxism and Language Philosophy, 1929). In 1929, Priboy Publishing House published Bakhtin's first book, Problems of Dostoevsky's Creative Work, which won great acclaim. Bakhtin's contacts with Resurrection, a religious philosophical circle of A.A. Meyer led to his arrest in the end of 1928 (in January 1929, he was released on his own recognisance and waited for his trial under house arrest). He was sentenced to five years at the work camp in Solovki; his sentence was commuted to exile to Kustanai. Bakhtin was rehabilitated in 1967. Left Leningrad in March of 1930. In 1924-30, he lived at 38 Radishcheva Street; at the corner of Vosstania Street and Saperny Lane.
