MAYAKOVSKY LIBRARY, central, municipal, public (44 Fontanka Embankment), dates back to the athenaeum, founded in 1868 by A.A. Cherkesov. In 1919, it was reorganised into the Central Municipal Library. During the Siege of 1941-44 the library continued operating, catering to residents, military units and military hospitals. In 1953, the library was named after V.V.Mayakovsky. In 2002 the library held some 1,500,000 volumes. The library has nine reading halls with a seating capacity of 515. Annually the library serves 100,000 people, giving out 2,000,000 volumes. The library includes the following departments: literature for young readers; art literature; literature in foreign languages and a book exchange department. Mayakovsky Library is an organisational and methodological centre of the public library system in St. Petersburg. Library staff does research in history of St. Petersburg. Since 1939, the library has been housed in the building of the former Metochion of Holy Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius (1844-50, architect A.M. Gornostaev, reconstructed).
