ERNEST (60 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue). A restaurant opened in 1909 by entrepreneur Ernest G. Hiegel (who also owned Medved Restaurant). The building housing the restaurant Ernest, as well as the greenhouse connected to it, were constructed in 1894-95 (architect A.I. Kovsharov); in 1897-98, and in 1903, the building's right wing and the greenhouse were extended (architect B.Y. Zonn). "Actors from the best foreign theatres" (such as Casino and Parisiana from Paris) gave daily performances at Ernest; it was also famous for its exquisite cuisine. Important cultural figures who visited the restaurant included Y.M. Yuryev, A.P. Chekhov, and F.I. Shalyapin (who lived nearby). In 1912, Ernest was closed down; after October 1917, the Musical Drama Theatre Orchestra gave performances at the Ernest Villa's concert hall. Today, the building houses YuNA, the St. Petersburg Humanitarian Children’s Centre.
