INSTITUTE OF ST. PETERSBURG, educational institution established in 1991 with the purpose of popularising St. Petersburg culture history; teaching a two-year course which included lectures on the history of architecture, literature, art, university education, etc. By 2002, about 400 students became qualified to teach regional studies in schools. The institute also has a youth department (located in the Palace of Creative Youth) and a children's department, intended for joint studies of children and adults. The institute conducts regular historical literary and musical Nights at the Fontanka (the authors V.B. and M.Y. Ayzenstadts), dealing with the history of Petersburg cultural sites located along the Fontanka, as well as Kolomna old-timers lecture concerts (the idea belongs to N.L. Entelis). The publishing program of the Institute includes publications of teacher editions for regional study teachers, Slide-journey (texts of city sight-seeing tours with 96 slides), books for children published in the Miraculous City series. It also holds seminars under the name of Public Meetings of the Institute of St. Petersburg.
