Professora Popova Street

PROFESSORA POPOVA STREET (in the 1810s - Pesochny Avenue, from the middle of the 19th century to 1940 - Pesochnaya Street), between Aptekarskaya Embankment and Pesochnaya Embankment, on Aptekarsky Island. The street was named after the inventor of the radio A. S. Popov. The construction of the street was started in the late 18th - early 19th centuries. Originally, it went from Aptekarsky Avenue to modern Vyazemsky Lane; in the 1860s, it was extended as far as Aptekarskaya Embankment and in 1911 - up to Barochnaya Street. The latest part up to Pesochnaya Embankment was built in the 1960s. The majority of buildings date back to the late 19th - 20th centuries: building 6 (1912, architect R.O. Ulman), building 7 (1913, architect G.Y. Gervits), building 26 (1911, architect I.B. Kaliberda), building 33 (1900, architect E.S. Biryukov), building 37b - the former school for blind children (1890s architect A.I. Tomishko; since 1906, the monument to the school's founder K.K. Grot was located on this place. In 1963, it was moved to Shaumyana Avenue), building 42 for the Government Automobile Licensing and Inspection Department (1962, architect N.E. Efimov), building 41 (1915, architect F.I. Lidval), building 43 (1931, architect E.A. Levinson), building 47 is the Youth Palace. In 1899-1900, the building of the Electrotechnical Institute was constructed (building 3/5 architect A.N. Vekshinsky), today it is Electrotechnical University. Research assistants of the institute were A.S. Popov, A.I. Berg, P.D. Voynarovsky, V.P. Vologdin, H.O. Graftio, V.V. Dmitriev, A.A. Shaposhnikov, M.A. Chatelaine, Y.M. Gakkel, A.F. Shorin. The following historical figures lived on Professora Popova Street: poetess V.M. Inber (building 4, 1941), in building 10 - man of letters V.O. Mikhnevich (1890s), artist M.V. Matyushin (1910s-40s), this building was visited by poets V.V. Mayakovsky and V.V. Khlebnikov, artists K.S. Malevich and P.N. Filonov. In 1942-44, writer V.V. Vishnevsky lived here. Building 24 housed the studio of sculptor A.M. Opekushin, where in the 1930s sculptors M.G. Manizer and E.A. Yanson-Manizer worked. On Professora Popova Street, there is the Influenza Scientific Research Institute (building 15/17) and Scientific Research Institute for Infantile Infections (building 9).
