LENINA SQUARE, at the intersection of Arsenalnaya Embankment and Botkinskaya Street. Named in 1924 in memory of V.I. Lenin's visit to Petrograd in April 1917; known as Lenina Alley until 1946. Its development started with the installation of the monument to Lenin in 1926 (sculptor S.A. Evseev, architects V.A. Shchuko, V.G. Gelfreich) and the construction of Lenina Alley in 1926-27, which provided a view of the monument from the Neva River (architects I.A. Fomin and L.A. Ilyin). A new celebration square appeared as a result of reconstruction of 1945-60 (architects N.V. Baranov, A.S. Ginzberg, A.K. Barutchev, Y.N. Lukin, N.G. Ageeva, G.I. Ivanov), with the monument to Lenin transferred to the centre, and a public garden laid around it; the reconstruction of the Artillery Academy and the Kalininsky District Soviet buildings was undertaken, and a school on the Arsenalnaya Embankment was constructed according to projects planned by architects Baranov and Lukin. In 1960, the new Finlyandsky Railway Station was put into operation (with the Ploshchad Lenina metro station in its left wing). In 1970, a front slope leading to the Neva was constructed (architect A.V. Vasilyev).
