LOMONOSOVA SQUARE (until 1948 - Chernysheva Square), between Zodchego Rossi Street and Fontanka River Embankment. It was named after M.V. Lomonosov (the first name was given after Count I.G. Chernyshev). The road was built in 1828. The ensemble of Lomonosova Square, that is connected by Zodchego Rossi Street with the ensemble of Ostrovskogo Square, was developed in 1834, when building 1/3 (former House of Ministry of People’s Education), building 2 (former buildings of Imperial Theatres Board) (both designed by architect C.I. Rossi) and the building at 57 Fontanka River Embankment (former House of Ministry of Internal Affairs; architect C.I. Rossi, I.I. Charlemagne the First) were completed. In 1877, a public garden was laid out on the square (replanned in 1892), a bust of Lomonosov was placed in its centre in 1892. In the late 1917 - early 1918, Building 1/3 housed People's Commissariat for Education. Today, there is Volodarsky Printing-House on Lomonosova Square. For references see the article on C.I. Rossi.
