Truda Square

TRUDA SQUARE, known as Blagoveshchenskaya Street from the 1830s to the 1880s, then called Blagoveshchenskaya Square until 1918. The square is surrounded by Angliiskaya Embankment, Konnogvardeysky Boulevard, Yakubovicha Street and Kryukov Canal Embankment. The square was formed in the 1840s, after part of Kryukov Canal had been filled-in. In the 18th century the area of the square incorporated the Convict Yard. In the 1790s the building of the Naval Quarters was erected on the square (architect F.I. Volkov, rebuilt by architect A.D. Zakharov). In 1853-61, Nikolaevsky Palace was built (house No. 4, called the Palace of Labour from 1917, hence the present-day name of the square). The Holy Annunciation Church was erected on the square in 1844-49 (hence the original name of the square; the church was taken down in 1929). In the 1840s, the square underwent reconstruction work due to the building of the Blagoveshchensky Bridge (see Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge), which linked the square with Vasilievsky Island. House No. 2 was built in 1845-49 specially for A.A. Vonlyarlyarsky (architect M.D. Bykovsky; the portico was added in 1910). During the siege of 1941-44, Truda Square accommodated the stronghold of anti-airborne defence; the area around the square was subjected to fierce bombardments, yet all the damaged buildings were restored in the late 1940s - early 1950s. House No. 3 was built in the 1970s (the majolica panels which used to embellish the building that occupied this site are reposited in the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg). The composer B.V. Asafyev lived at 6 Truda Square from 1933 to 1943. In 1998, a pedestrian subway was built at Truda Square at the place where a section of filled-in Admiralteisky Canal was re-excavated.
