DURNOVO Peter Pavlovich (1835 - 1919, Petrograd), statesman and public figure, Infantry General (1890), Adjutant General (1905). Graduated from the Page Corps in 1853 and the Imperial Military Academy in 1855. Durnovo started his service at the General Staff, and took part in the Crimean War of 1853-56. In 1866-70, he was appointed the governor of Kharkov, and moved to Moscow in 1872-78. In 1882-84, he was Head of the Department of Imperial Lands. In 1904, he was admitted to the State Assembly. A year later, he assumed the functions of Governor General of Moscow. From 1881 through June 1917, Durnovo was an elected member of the St. Petersburg (Petrograd) City Duma (Chairman since 1904), and a city representative in the provincial assembly. He was repeatedly elected a member of the City Board of Administration, and was the Executive Medical Commission's first Chairman. For a number of years, he was Chairman of the Permanent Financial Committee of the City Duma. In 1903, he entered the City Commission for the Preparation of St. Petersburg's 200th Anniversary Celebration. Durnovo was also known as an entrepreneur, and a collector of art and rare plants. He lived in his ancestral mansion at 16 Angliiskaya Embankment (the 18th century building was rebuilt in 1837, architect A.A. Mikhaylov; and in 1872, architect L.F. Fontana), and owned some apartment houses at 13-15 Polyustrovskaya Embankment (now Sverdlovskaya Embankment, not preserved). The Durnovo summer residence (22 Sverdlovskaya Embankment, 1785-86; rebuilt in 1813-14, architect A.A. Mikhaylov) is a monument of late 18th - early 19th centuries architecture.
