ESCORT, His Imperial Majesty's Personal Escort, a special guards unit, officially known as the Emperor's Personal Guard. The Escort was established in 1811 as a combined Cossack-Caucasian hundred. From 1828, the Escort was also staffed by highlanders and Transcaucasian noblemen as a sign of the Emperor's favour to the inhabitants of the Caucuses. From 1881, the unit consisted of four hundred Cossacks, two hundred of which came from the Terki Cossack Forces, and the other two hundred belonging to the Kuban Cossack Forces. The Escort was lodged in the Cossacks Guards quarters on the Obvodny Canal.
