USHAKOV Fedor Fedorovich (1745-1817), Naval Commander, Admiral (1799). Graduated from the Naval Cadet School (1766; 17 Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment - memorial plaque). In 1766-68 served in the Baltic Fleet, in 1769-75 was transferred to the Don Flotilla. In 1775, returned to the Baltic Fleet; in 1775-79, participated in the Mediterranean Campaign. Upon return in 1780, Ushakov was appointed Commander of The Standard Imperial yacht, however, declined the office and was made Commander of the Viktor battleship (1780-82). From 1783 served in the Black Sea Fleet, achieved a number of victories over the Turkish Fleet. In May 1802, assumed the office of Commander-in-Chief of the Baltic Rowing Fleet and Naval Depots of the Fleet Command in St. Petersburg. Retired in 1807. The Ushakovsky Bridge had been named in his honour in 1952; in 1989 Ushakovskaya Embankment was named after him. On 30 November 2000, Ushakov was canonised as one of the locally revered saints of the Saransk Eparchy.
