Union of Archangel Michael, the political organization

Categories / Social Life/Political Parties and Organizations

RUSSIAN NATIONAL UNION OF ARCHANGEL MICHAEL was a monarchical organization created by adherents of V. M. Purishkevich as a result of the split of the Union of the Russian People. Its motto was: For the Orthodox Church, Autocratic Tsar and the Russian Nation. Its charter was registered on 11 March 1908. The ruling organ was the Central Chamber (headed by Purishkevich, and including I.I. Baranov, S.A. Volodimerov, I.Vostorgov, P.P. Surin, G.A. Shechkov et. al.). From the beginning of the World War I of 1914-18, Purishkevich gave up his post in the Union of Archangel Michael, through the end of 1916; N.D. Obleukhov served as the acting head. In 1913, there were over 160 large groups in the structure of The Union of Archangel Michael, not counting small groups in the villages. In contrast with the Union of Russian People, The Union of Archangel Michael was loyal to the State Duma considering that it should help the Tsar in implementing his policy and controlling the officials. In other questions the programme of The Union of Archangel Michael did not differ from programmes of other monarchical organizations. The organs of The Union of Archangel Michael were the newspaper Messenger of the Russian National Union of Archangel Michael and Direct Way Journal. The Union prepared the publication of the Book of Russian Sorrow comprised of 14 volumes (1908-14). After the February Revolution of 1917, The Union of Archangel Michael was dissolved.
