FIRST OF MARCH 1887 (The Second First of March, by analogy with the First of March 1881), the day of the attempt on the life of the Emperor Alexander III. It was prepared by members of the Terrorist Faction of People's Will, created in 1886 by A.I. Ulyanov and P.Y. Shevyrev, students from Petersburg University. Gatherings by participants of the attempt were held at 20 Tuchkov Lane; bombs were prepared at Ulyanov's apartment (21 Alexandrovsky Lane, today Dobrolyubova Avenue; building not preserved). From 26 February, throwers V.S. Osipanov, V.D. Generalov and P.I. Andreyushkin, along with three signallers, went daily onto Nevsky Prospect waiting for the passage of the Emperor. On the first of March, they all were arrested and imprisoned at the Trubetskoy Bastion Prison. Their organization was annihilated, and 15 people were prosecuted in April 1887 at the Court of the Special Commission of the Ruling Senate. Osipov, Generalov, Andreyushkin, Shevyrev and Ulyanov were sentenced to death on 8 May 1887, and hanged in the inner yard at the Schlisselburg Fortress (memorial plaque installed). The other conspirators were sentenced to different terms of penal servitude and exile to Siberia.
