KRASNOSELSKY DISTRICT is an administrative territorial unit of St. Petersburg. (Its territory administration is located at 3 Partizana Germana Street) Its present day borders were established in 1973. It was named after the town of Krasnoe Selo. It is located in the south-western part of the city. In the east, it borders on Kirovsky and Moskovsky districts; in the west it borders on Petrodvortsovy District and with Lomonosovsky District of Leningrad region in the south. The district reaches the Neva mouth shore of the Gulf of Finland. The Krasnoselsky District includes the following micro-districts: South-Western, Uritsk, Sosnovaya Polyana and the territories of the former settlements of Staropanovo, Volodarsky, Gorelovo, Toriki, Krasnoye Selo, Mozhaysky. The area of the district is 92 sq.km with the population of 303,000 people (2003). Its territory has seven municipal divisions, including municipal divisions Nos. 37, 38, Sosnovaya Polyana, Uritsk, municipal divisions Nos. 41, 42 and Krasnoye Selo. The leading defence edge of Leningrad passed along present-day Veteranov Avenue during the siege of 1941-44; its southern part was occupied by German troops. The territory to the north of the railway to Lomonosov was built up in 1970s including the earlier built up settlement of Uritsk. Residential quarters of the Southwest are partially built on the raised territories that had been a waste marshland before. The railroad line to Lomonosov passes the territory of the district including the stations of Ligovo, Sosnovaya Polyana, Volodarsky; as well as railroad line to Gatchina including the stations of Gorelovo, Skachki, Krasnoye Selo, and Mozhaysky. Main thoroughfares include Tallinskoe Highway passing into the federal motorway Narva, Peterhofskoe Highway, Veteranov Avenue, Narodnogo Opolcheniya Avenue, and Partizana Germana Street. Among industrial enterprises of the district are Krasnogorodskaya Experimental Paper Mill, Mechanical Waste Treatment Factory, and Leningrad Electrical Mechanical Plant. Treatment facilities of the Southwest are currently under construction (2002) at the Neva mouth shore of the Gulf of Finland in the territory of the district. The district houses University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Lenfilm Film Studio, and Military College of Radio-electronics. The territory of the district is mostly covered with green plantations. Its most well known parks include Yuzhno-Primorsky, Novo-Znamenka, Sosnovaya Polyana, and Nagorny. The district has four large lakes used for recreational purposes, including Gorelovskoye, Bezymyannoye, Dolgoye and Dudergofskoye. Among its historical and architectural monuments are Novo-Znamenka mansion, Holy Trinity Church, the memorial of Green Belt of Fame and Kirovsky Val (includes the alley of 900 birch trees.)
