STANYUKOVICH Konstantin Mikhailovich (1843-1903), a prose writer and publicist. He lived in St. Petersburg from 1855. He studied at the Naval Cadet Corps in 1857-60 (present-day 17 Leytenanta Shmidta Embankment; collective memorial plaque). He served with the Navy in 1860-63 (among other things, he happened to sail round the world), then, in 1867-76, he worked at various establishments. In 1866-69, 1878-83, 1889-1902 he lived in St. Petersburg, where he was engaged in journalism. His articles reflect democratic views of post-reform Russia, including the views on St. Petersburg life. In 1883 he owned and published Delo. In 1884 he was arrested under the charge of revolutionary activity and exiled to Siberia (1885-88). From 1892 he was co-editor of Russkoe Bogatstvo. Stanyukovich was renowned as a marine prose writer (the book of essays Extracts from the Circumnavigation..., 1867), as well as an author of narratives and novels, considering the situation of democratic intelligentsia in the post-reform Russia (novels First Steps, 1891, The Indifferent, 1899, etc.). In 1896 Stanyukovich was awarded the A.F. Pogossky's Golden Medal by the St. Petersburg Committee of Literacy. He also won the Pushkin Prize in 1901 for his collections of stories Sea Stories (1888), Seamen (1891) etc. In the 1890s he lived at 29 Kirochnaya Street. In 1902 he left for Italy, where he died.
