USPENSKY Gleb Ivanovich (1843-1902, St. Petersburg), prose writer and publicist. He did his studies at the Petersburg University (1861) and in Moscow University (1862), without receiving a degree. In 1864-67 he lived continuously in St. Petersburg. In the 1870s-80s he came to the city almost every year and stayed here for several months up to a year. His ambivalent feeling towards St. Petersburg merged love and hatred. Later he described the 1860s, the hardest years of his life in St. Petersburg, as "a pernicious time overcome by drinking". He portrayed post-reform Russia in his St. Petersburg Sketches (1865) through the typical features of the life in the capital. From 1865 he had regularly contributed to the Sovremennik journal, where in 1866 his sketches were published. Later they formed a cycle the Customs of Rasteryaeva Street, which brought renown to the author. In 1868 he started to contribute to Otechestvennye zapiski. The impressions produced by frequent strolls through the city and visions of the everyday life of St. Petersburg served as the basis for domestic outlines in his works. He lived at 3 Voznesensky Avenue (1864-65), 4 Bolshaya Meschanskaya Street (present-day Kazanskaya Street) (1866, 1868-69), 36 Liteyny Avenue (1866-67), in the 1870s he dwelled in the area of Nevsky Prospect, in the 1880s he resided at Bolshoy Tsarskoselsky Avenue (present-day 125 Moskovsky Avenue), and Vasilievsky Island. In 1892 he went down with a serious mental derangement and was put into Frey hospital (area of the houses Nos. 58-60 Fifth Line of Vasilievsky Island). He was buried at Literatorskie Mostki. In 1965 the name of Uspensky was attached to Gleba Uspenskogo Street (former Kolmovskaya Street).
