NIKITENKO Alexander Vasilievich (1804-1877, Pavlovsk), literary critic, literature historian, academic member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1855), privy councilor (1865). Permanently resident in St. Petersburg from 1824, he graduated in 1828 from the Philosophy and Law Faculty of Petersburg University, assuming one year prior to the graduation the Secretary position at the Chancellory of the Petersburg School District Overseer and continued until 1835. Consecutively, in 1832 he was granted the title of associate professor, and in 1834 that of professor of Philology of Petersburg University, lecturing there until 1864. He continued lecturing at a number of other city academic institutions. In 1833-48 he was a member of the Censorship Committee; in 1853 entered the Ministry for People's Education where he until 1858 acted as an extraordinary commisioner; from 1859 until 1865 held the post of Administrative Services Director of the Book Printing Committee, and from 1860 until 1862 served as a member of the Central Censorship Department. He also edited Sovremennik (1847-48) and Zhurnal Ministerstva Narodnogo Prosveshcheniya (1856-60) journals, the newspaper Severnaya Pochta (1862). His books Up from Serfdom: My Childhood and Youth in Russia 1804-1824 and Diary (published in 1888-92) provide a unique and valuable source for the study of the history of Russian society, literature and culture. In the 1850s Nikitenko lived at 13/9 Vladimirsky Avenue. He was buried at Pavlovsk.
