STASYULEVICH Mikhail Matveevich (1826, St. Petersburg -1911), historian, journalist, public figure. He graduated the Larinskaya Gymnasium in St. Petersburg (1843, where in 1849-53 took up teaching history), and the Department of History and Philology of the Petersburg University (1849). Commencing in 1852 as an assistant professor, in 1858 was made a professor at the Chair for World History of the Petersburg University. Pypin) filed a resignation in token of protest against repressive measures applied to the participants of student disturbances. A Russian liberalist of an eminent stature, Stasyulevich in 1866 founded the Vestnik Evropy journal which he published and edited until 1908. In 1874-79 he published the popular Russkaya Biblioteka, (9 issues of which contained works of Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Nikolay Gogol, Vasily Zhukovsky, Alexander Griboedov, Ivan Turgenev, Nikolay Nekrasov, М. Е. Saltykov-Shchedrin, Leo Tolstoy). He also ran a printing house located at 7 Second Line of Vasilievsky Island; and 28 Fifth Line of Vasilievsky Island). From 1881 Stasyulevich was regularly elected speaker of the Petersburg City Duma, heading its waterworks and people's education commissions. He resided at 20 Galernaya Street, where Vestnik Evropy staff used to assemble on Mondays and from the 1890s, on Saturdays. Stasyulevich is buried in aisle of the Holy Resurrection Church at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery (the tomb has not survived).
