MURAVYEV Mikhail Nikitich (1757-1807, St. Petersburg), writer, statesman, Privy Councilor (1800), Fellow of the Russian Academy (1804). Father of two Decembrists, N.M. Muravyev and A.M. Muravyev. In 1768-70, he studied at the gymnasium attached to Moscow University, and then at Moscow University, never receiving a degree. His residence in St. Petersburg was not consistent, though he lived there from 1772, the same year he entered the Izmaylovsky Life Guards Regiment as a private. From 1785, Muravyev educated and instructed Grand Prince Alexander Pavlovich (Emperor-to-be Alexander I) and Grand Prince Konstantin Pavlovich. In 1800, he was elected a senator, and appointed Deputy Minister of Public Education three years later. The Muravyev's literary heritage is vast and diverse, comprising many genres, and had a considerable impact upon the evolution of Russian sentimentalism and romanticism; however, it was mostly beyond the mass reader's reach. Muravyev occupied a building belonging to the Ministry of Public Education at Sadovaya Street (building not preserved; today part of Apraksin Dvor). Buried at Lazarevskoe Cemetery at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
