SEVERNY VESTNIK (Northern Herald), a literary, scientific and political journal, of populist (narodnik) orientation, which appeared in 1885-98 until 1889 under А. М. Evreinova's editorship. The staff writers of the suppressed Otechestvennye Zapiski extensively contributed to Severny Vestnik, with N. K. Mikhaylovsky, V. G. Korolenko, G. I. Uspensky , А. N. Pleshcheev (who engaged Anton Chekhov to write for the journal), K. M. Stanyukevich writing for the journal. In 1890, L. Y. Gurevich took over the periodical; the journal's de facto editor critic A. Volynsky (real name А. L. Flexer), moulded its ideological and artistic stature, making it Russia's first modernist journal. In the 1890s along with the representatives of the realistic trend in literature such as Leo Tolstoy, N. S. Leskov, D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak, М. Gorky, P.D. Boborykin et al, among others D. S. Merezhkovsky, Zinaida Gippius, Fedor Sologub, K. D. Balmont, N. М. Minsky contributed for the publications. The editorial office of the Severny Vestnik in the 1890s was located at 9 Troitskaya Street (now Rubinshteina Street), being one of the centres of St. Petersburg's literary and artistic life.
