Brokgauz-Efron, publishing house, 1889-1930

BROKGAUZ-EFRON, a publishing house established in 1889 on the initiative of S.A. Vengerov by a St. Petersburg printer I.A. Efron and Leipzig Publishing Company of F.A. Brokgauz. The publishing house was situated at 6 Prachechny Lane; in the 1920s it moved to Bolshoy Gostiny Dvor. In 1890-1907 it published An Encyclopaedic Dictionary in 86 half-volumes, which many prominent scientists and cultural figures contributed to; in 1990-93 the Dictionary was reprinted. In 1911-16 the publishing house issued A New Encyclopaedic Dictionary (Vol. 1-29, unfinished). Among other publications, A Concise Encyclopaedic Dictionary (Vol. 1-3, 1899-1902), The Encyclopaedia of Practical Medicine (Vol. 1-5, 1908-1915), The Jewish Encyclopaedia (Vol. 1-16, 1908-13; reprinted in 1991-92) etc. The Library of Great Writers Series (edited by Vengerov) comprising the collected works of many Russian and foreign men of letters. Other editions include The History of Europe from Different Countries and Epochs (edited by N.I. Kareev and I.V. Luchinsky), An Inexpensive Library for Self-Education, A Library of Natural Science, A Library of Industrial Knowledge (edited by D.I. Mendeleev). In 1917 the publishing house was temporarily closed, to resume its activity in 1918 under the supervision of the Publishing Joint-Stock Company. In 1919-1931 the publishing house functioned under its original name, with entrepreneurs A.F. Perelman and N.E. Gartstein as its directors. It published educational and teaching books, books on engineering, history and geography, along with classical works of world literature.
