Time, publishing house, 1922-1934

TIME, a co-operative publishing house established in 1922 (registered in January 1923). The publishing house was set up by publisher and editor I.F. Wolfson, who was also its first president, the editor-in-chief was literary critic G.P. Blok, a cousin of A.A. Blok. From May 1932, the editorial board was headed by A.V. Lunacharsky. Time was the first publishing house in Russia to issue the collected works of R. Rolland and S. Zweig (both collections were published under the supervision of the authors); it also published the collected works of Stendhal, M. Proust, A. Gide, works of contemporary European writers, such as T. Mann, A. Seghers, H. Barbusse, H. Fallada et al. The publishing house was largely supported by M. Gorky. Vremya publishing house introduced a new type of scientific popular literature, the Engaging Science Series, which enjoyed enormous popularity; the publication of the series was sustained by A.E. Fersman, Y.I. Perelman, A.V. Zinger et al. Time editions were remarkable for their high level of preparation, artistic design and typography of books. The offices of the publishing house were situated at 3A Liteyny Avenue and 7 Seventh Rozhdestvenskaya Street (present-day Seventh Sovetskaya Street), in the flats of Blok and Wolfson. In 1934 the publishing house was closed.
