Enlightenment, publishing house, 1896-1922

ENLIGHTENMENT, a joint-stock publishing company which functioned in 1896-22. The publishing house was established by N.S. Tsetlin, a public figure and entrepreneur, together with the German Bibliographic Institute Company of J. Meyer. Its office was situated at 50 Nevsky Prospect, while the chief bookstore occupied a building at 75 Zabalkansky Avenue (present-day 91 Moskovsky Avenue). The publishing house issued Comprehensive Encyclopaedia edited by S.N. Yuzhakov (Vol. 1-22, 1902-05), works of Russian and foreign writers, books on art, history, natural science, engineering etc. The World Library Series comprised the collected works of N.V. Gogol, F.M. Dostoevsky, I.A. Krylov, M.Y. Lermontov, A.S.Pushkin, A.N. Ostrovsky, C. Dickens, E. Zola, G. de Maupassant and many others. The publishing house also did the series The Modern Library and Library of Enlightenment. Enlightenment editions were remarkable for the high level of textological and editorial work. The company used a vast array of bookstores throughout the country.
