SOVIET WRITER, the Leningrad Department of the publishing house (it was housed in the House of Books, from the 1980s it was situated on 36 Liteiny Avenue), was established in 1934, it inherited the publishing principles and traditions of the Publishing House of Writers in Leningrad (1927-34), it paid attention to works by contemporary Soviet writers. In 1934-40, it published books by A. S. Grin, M. E. Kozakov, V. M. Sayanov, M. L. Slonimsky, M. M. Zoshchenko, N. K. Chukovsky, L. N. Rakhmanov, Y. N. Tynyanov, K. A. Fedin, O. D. Forsh et al.; in the years of the siege it published books by O. F. Bergholz, N. S. Tikhonov, V. A. Kaverin, Slonimsky et al.; in postwar years - books by F. A. Abramov, D. А. Granin, Y. P. German, M. A. Dudin, V. K. Ketlinskaya, V. F. Panova, E. L. Schwarz, V. S. Shefner et al., and also research work by B. V. Tomashevsky, A. S. Dolinin, P. N. Berkov, D. S. Likhachev and other literary critics. Debut works by Leningrad writers were published in the anthologies Young Leningrad and Day of Poetry. The literary union arranged at the publishing house at the end of the 1940s - beginning of the 1950s by Е. I. Naumov played an important role in the postwar literary life of the city, it was here that V. V. Konetsky, A. M. Volodin, V. V. Golyavkin, G. A. Goryshin et al. were trained in the 1950s. The publication of the Big and Small series of the Poet's Library (established in 1933 on the initiative of M. Gorky at the Publishing House of Writers in Leningrad) marked by high level of scientific preparation of the texts became an important achievement of the Leningrad Department of the Soviet Writer. In 1992 the Leningrad Department of the Soviet Writer ceased operations and was succeeded by the publishing house Petersburg Writer. The series New Poet's Library is published by Petersburg Publishing House Academic Project.
