KIPRENSKY Orest Adamovich (1782, Nezhinskaya farm-stead near Koporye in St. Petersburg Province - 1836), artist. He lived in St. Petersburg from time to time from 1788 to 1828. He studied at the Academy of Arts (1788-1803), he was a member of the Academy (1812). In 1816-23, he was sent to Italy and France as a retainer of the Academy, from 1831 he was a professor. He initiated the romantic trend in Russian art of the 19th century. He painted numerous portraits in which he sought an opening for the psychological condition of the portraitee, attempting to render the individuality and inspiration of the image (Life-Guards' Colonel E. V. Davydov, 1809; E. E. Avdulina, 1822-23, both are in the State Russian Museum; Countess E. P. Rostopchina, 1809; A. S. Pushkin, 1827; Self-Portrait, 1828; all are in the State Tretyakov Gallery). The subjects of his paintings were historical and mythological (Dmitry Donskoy on Kulikovo Field, 1805, the State Russian Museum). He executed a number of graphic portraits (the series Heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812, (1813)). He lived in Italy from 1828 (Rome, Naples). He lived at 25 Fontanka River Embankment in 1814-16; in 1823-28, he lived on 32 Angliiskaya Embankment; his workshop was situated at 34 Fontanka River Embankment.
