Makovsky V.E. (1846-1920), Artist

Makovsky Vladimir Egorovich (1846-1920, Petrograd) was an artist. He was a brother of K. E. Makovsky. He studied at the Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1861-66, under S. K. Zaryanko. He was a member of the Academy of Arts from 1873, and a professor from 1892. He became a full member of the Academy in 1893. He was a member of the Fellowship of Travelling Art Exhibitions from 1872. He lived in St. Petersburg from 1894. He taught at the Academy of Arts from 1894 until 1918. He was rector in 1894-96. He executed genre paintings, lyrical and dramatic short stories depicting subjects from city life; they are marked by precise social descriptions, convincing treatment of subjects, and compassion for the fate of "humiliated man", such works as Meeting, 1883, On the Boulevard, 1886-87, Failure of the Bank, 1881, all housed in the State Tretyakov Gallery. He lived in the building of the Academy of Arts in the 1890-1910s, 1 Fourth Line of Vasilievsky Island. He was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery.
