Categories / Art/Fine Arts/Personalia

STERLIGOV Vladimir Vasilievich (1904-1973, Petrodvorets), painter. Sterligov studied the principles of cubism and suprematism in K.S. Malevich State Institute of Artistic Culture (1926). Together with V.M. Ermolaeva, K.K. Rozhdestvensky and L.A. Yudin, he entered the Group of Pictorial Plastic Realism. In the early 1930s he contributed to the children's journals Chizh and Ezh. Later, in 1934-38, he served a term in the camp near Karaganda on a fabricated charge. Sterligov practised landscapes, interiors, still life paintings and portraits. From 1960 onwards he developed a new plastic spatial principle in painting; this principle was based on the formation of spherical elements in painting, demonstrated in such works as Upon the Sublime (1968), Ambient Geometry (1973). Both paintings are reposited in the State Russian Museum. Sterligov taught numerous students and developed a wide following, A.B. Baturin, G.G. Zubkov and M.G. Tserush among the, although he was not officially recognised. The joint exhibition he held in 1966 together with his wife T.N. Glebova at the Leningrad Department of the Union of Painters was closed down by the authorities on its opening day. He lived at 2/49 Ozerkovaya Street, Petrodvorets from 1966, while his studio was located at 52 Lenina Street. He was buried at Babigonskoe Cemetery.
