FILONOV Pavel Nikolaevich (1883-1941, Leningrad), painter and graphic artist. From 1896 he was living in St. Petersburg, where he studied painting at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts (1896-1901), L.E. Dmitriev-Kavkazsky's studio (1903-08) and the Academy of Arts, of which he was an irregular student from 1908 to 1910. His early works render the typical features of neo-primitivism and expressionism, as seen in The Feast of Kings, 1913, the State Russian Museum). Filonov developed the principles of analytical art, based on a thorough tracing of the tiniest parts of a painting, its protoplasts mingling into complex conceptual compositions, demonstrated in The Flowers of Universal Flowering (1915, State Russian Museum). He stated his artistic credentials in the manifestos entitled Made Paintings (1914), The Declaration of Universal Flowering (1923) and a treatise The Ideology of Analytical Art and the Principle of Madeness (1923). In 1910-14 Filonov was a founding member of the Union of Youth. His other achievements include his illustrating the books of futurist poets and participation in the design of the stage for Vladimir Mayakovsky's Luna Park Theatre, 1913. In 1915 he wrote a poem The Chant of Universal Flowering. In 1923 he was elected the head of the department of general ideology of the Institute of Artistic Culture. Two years later he initiated and became president of an artistic association called Masters of the Analytical Art (Filonov's School), where his students and followers gathered. He lived at 19 Literatorov Street from 1919 to 1941 (memorial plaque). He starved to death during the siege of Leningrad, and was buried at Serafimovskoe Cemetery.
