MILITARY AND NAVAL MUSEUM, Central Museum of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation (4 Birzhevaya Square), one of Russia's oldest museums. It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1709 as Model Chamber, where all design projects and models of all Russian ships under construction were handed over to. From 1805 the Naval Museum was housed in the Admiralty building, and from 1939-40 - in the former Stock Exchange building at the Spit of Vasilievsky Island. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 the museum was evacuated to Ulyanovsk; shortly after the siege was lifted, the museum returned to Leningrad. With the collection stock of about 800 exhibits the museum displays among other exhibits a small boat of Peter the Great, about 2,000 ship models, over 7,000 pieces of maritime equipment and armament samples, over 3,500 flags and banners as well as paintings, battle ships and vessels memorabilia, orders and medals, uniforms, photo materials and other items. The museum also maintains a library and an archive. In 1920-40 a large part of ship designs was handed over to the Russian Navy State Archive. The exposition has sections of History of the Russian Fleet (18th century -1917, central hall) and the USSR Navy (a gallery on the second floor). Aurora Cruiser Museum, Kronstadt Fortress Museum and Road of Life Museum (in Osinovets Village, Vsevolozhsky District, Leningrad Region) are subordinated to the Central Military and Naval Museum.
