NARODOVOLETS (10 Shkipersky Canal), memorial complex, affiliation of the Central Navy museum, opened in 1994. Narodovolets (D-2) was one of the first three Soviet submarines, constructed at the Baltic Shipbuilding Works in 1927-31. In the 1930s operated within the Baltic Fleet and the Northern Flotilla; during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 participated in the operations in the Baltic Sea. In 1956-87 was based in Kronstadt as a training ship. In 1989 on completion of the reconstruction was installed on shore as a memorial museum of the submarine fleet. The exhibition tells about the constructors and creators of the first Soviet submarines, the service of submariners on the eve of and during the Great Patriotic War. The exposition contains authentic mechanisms and armament, communication facilities and gives an idea of everyday activities on board the ship. Technical devices allow to recreate the noise of working diesel engines, of acoustic signals and commands for torpedo attacks; the newsreel features war chronicles.
