COMMUNICATION MUSEUM, A. S. Popov Central (7 Pochtamtskaya Street) is the first such museum in Russia. It ranks among the biggest museums of its kind in the world. The Museum of Communications was established on 11 September, 1872 on the initiative of director of telegraphs K. K. Lyuders as the Telegraph Museum. It was called the Post Telegraph Museum in 1884-1924. It became the Museum of People's Communications in 1924, and received its present-day name in 1945. The museum's collection reflects the history of post, telegraph, telephone and television communication. As of 2003, the collection holds over 7 million objects, and includes the signs of post payment, open letters and stamped envelopes; examples of Russian mail boxes, seals and stamps; original radio apparatuses, telegraph apparatuses and telephone apparatuses, including the various apparatuses by J. Chateau, P. L. Schilling, B. E. Jacoby, telephones by E. I. Gvozdev, P. M. Golubitsky, E. V. Kolbasyev, and a radio set by A. S. Popov; and documents and iconographic materials. There is an academic technical library and a reference library. The Museum of Communications is housed in the former Chancellor A. A. Bezborodko's Palace. The palace was erected in the middle of the 18th century, rebuilt once in 1783-95 by architect J. Quarenghi, partially rebuilt again in 1836-37 by architect A. K. Cavos, and renovated in 1870 by architect N. A. Lyubimov. An up to date exhibition was opened in May 2003.
