Govorov L.A. (1897-1955), military commander, Marshal

GOVOROV Leonid Alexandrovich (1897-1955), military commander, Marshal of the Soviet Union (1944), Hero of the Soviet Union (1945). In 1916 enrolled in Petrograd Polytechnic Institute, and was the same year drafted into the army; completed an accelerated training course at the Konstantinovsky artillery school and in 1917 graduated in the rank of second lieutenant. In 1918-19 served in the army of Admiral A.V. Kolchak, from 1920 in the Red Army. He graduated from Frunze Military Academy (1932) and the Academy of General Staff (1938); in 1938-39 served as Academy lecturer. In May-June of 1941 appointed head of the Dzerzhinsky Artillery Academy. In the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-40, was appointed Chief of Artillery Staff of the 7th Army. In 1940-41, served as Deputy Inspector General of Artillery of the Red Army. From the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 fought on the Western Front. From October 1941, commander of the 5th Army located near Moscow. From April 1942, commander of troops on the Leningrad Front, from June 1942 to the end of war, served as commander of Leningrad Front forces. Led the operations on the breaking (1943) and lifting of the blockade (1944), liberation of the Baltics. From October 1944, co-ordinated operations in Leningrad, headed the Second and the Third Baltic fronts. In 1945-46, commander of the Leningrad Military District, afterwards occupied a number of command posts. In 1942-46 lived at 29/37 Kronverkskaya Street (memorial plaque). In 1999 a monument to Marshala Govorov was unveiled on the Stachek Square (sculptor V.Y.Bogolyubov). In 1955 a new street was named after Govorov (Marshala Govorova Street) in Kirovsky district.
