Anti-aircraft balloons

Categories / Army. Navy/Blokade

ANTI-AIRCRAFT BALOONS, unmanned aerial vehicles, hydrogen-filled canvas spheres, used as antiaircraft defence in June-November 1941 and from February 1942. The balloons were launched during an air raid, reaching as high as 100-250 m, above the most critical facilities, in an attempt to hamper enemy aircrafts from reaching their targets. The balloons were operated by three regiments of the Leningrad Air Defence Forces, which had up to 300 posts. Four German aircrafts were destroyed during the siege after colliding with balloon ropes.
