The 2nd Rifle Battalion, the future 2nd Life-Guard Rifle Regiment, was risen and its barracks began to construct at the Orlov Gates in 1887.

The town had a population of 8,584 without servicemen of garrison. 325 noblemen, 51 clergymen, 164 retired soldiers and 360 their wifes and children, 533 merchants, 227 petty bourgeoisie, 48 craftsmen, 854 State peasants, 1294 landowner peasants, 119 German colonists, 57 free peasants, 444 wifes of servicemen, 1,461 children of all social classes were among them. The denomination composition was: 90 percent members of the Orthodox Church, 7 percent Lutherans, 3 percent Catholics, several Muslims.
