KARPINSKY ALL-RUSSIAN GEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE, a research institute of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, situated at 74 Sredny Avenue of Vasilievsky Island. It was founded in 1931 on the basis of the Geological Committee and named the Central Research Institute for Geological Exploration until 1939. The institute was named after A. P. Karpinsky in 1982. It conducts comprehensive geological studies of Russia and the location of natural resources, constructs general geological maps, develops methods for geological survey and search of solid natural resources, and supervises stratigraphic, petrological, geochemical and metallogenic research systematically. There are a number of institutions operating under the Institute such as the Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee, the Scientific Editorial Board of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation for appraising geological maps, and the Paleontological Society. The institute work is associated with Y. A. Bilibin, A. A. Borisyak, A. P. Gerasimov, I. I. Gorsky, Y. A. Zhemchuzhnikov, A. N. Zavaritsky, V. K. Kotulsky, D. V. Nalivkin, V. P. Nekhoroshev, N. F. Pogrebov, P. I. Preobrazhensky, S. S. Smirnov, P. I. Stepanov, P. M. Tatarinov, V. I. Yavorsky and other scientists. The institute building was constructed for the Geological Committee in 1912-14 by architect A. A. Polishchuk assisted by architects M. G. Preobrazhensky and I. I. Pomerantsev.
