Northern Cable, the factory

Northern Cable (40 Kozhevennaya Line) was an open joint-stock company, the oldest factory in the country dealing in design and manufacturing of cable and conductors, mainly of complicated design. The company was founded in 1879 by a joint-stock company of Siemens and Halske Russian Electrotechnical Plants. In 1906 the Company was transferred into the property of United Cable Plants joint stock company together with Velten and Guillaume copper milling and wire plant on the Malaya Okhta. In 1918, the factory was nationalised and called Northern Cable Factory, but the production at the factory was halted. In 1922 the Company went back on, manufacturing power cable, including oil-filled cable for power lines, and enameled conductors for radio engineering (first of its kind in the country). In the years of the Great Patriotic war of 1941-45 the factory produced cable and conductors for mines, electric parts for tanks, and later parts for transportation of electric energy to the besieged Leningrad, including the route via the conductor line laid on the bottom of the Ladoga Lake. After the war the factory continued designing and manufacturing new types of cable: high power cable (for transportation of electric energy), low power cable (for signal transmission in various types of communications channels, such as video cable, radio-frequency cable, and optical cable), with various types of insulation and additional protection of the cable, such as a metal tube, coaxial and other types of sheaths. The factory also produces cable input devices, factory-assembled switchgear, pilot cables, and cables for research in electrical physics. Factory products earned medals at international and All-Russian exhibitions, fairs and competitions.
