SAPPER LIFE GUARDS BATTALION, engineer guards sub-division, formed in 1812 of officers and low ranks of engineer troops, excelled in the Patriotic War of 1812. Participated in the wars with France in 1813-14, Russo-Turkish wars of 1828-29 and 1877-78, and WW I of 1914-18. From 1814, quartered in St. Petersburg, in the area east from Liteiny Avenue, from the middle of the 19th century, in barracks at 25-29 Kirochnaya Street). The Battalion chapel was the SS. Kosma & Damian Church (28a Kirochnaya Street; 1876-79, architect M.E. Messmacher, destroyed in the late 1940s). In 1899 a monument to field engineers was unveiled in front of the church, transported from the Peterhof camp (not preserved). In 1915 the Sapper battalion was deployed as a regiment. Disbanded in February 1918. The Sapper battalion gave its name to the Saperny Lane.
