UNION OF SCIENTISTS, St. Petersburg, located at 5 Universitetskaya Embankment, a public organisation established in 1989 in order to contribute to the development of science, train a new generation of scientists, increase the prestige of science, the status of scientists in society, and popularise the principles of free scientific work and independent research. With about 700 members and 18 commissions and seminars, the union itself joined a number of international organisations in 2002. It is engaged in interdisciplinary studies, reviews of legislation relevant to science and education, as well as a number of educational programs. It is represented in public councils for graduate and postgraduate education in science and economics, which are attached to the City Duma.
