CELL BIOLOGY of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of, located at 4 Tikhoretsky Avenue, is the main scientific research institution for studying cell biology. It was established in 1957 on the initiative of D. N. Nasonov (the first director, 1957-58) based on the Laboratory of General and Cellular Physiology of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Its main research is devoted to the biology of cell and sub-cell structures. A number of research works held at the institute have practical meaning for medicinal problems, biotechnologies and agriculture. The All-Union (today All-Russian) Society of Proto-Zoologists was established in the structure of the institute in 1968. The Society of Cellular Biology was established in 1999. The institute publishes the journal Tsitologiya since 1959.
