SECHENOV INSTITUTE OF PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY of the Russian Academy of Sciences, located at 44 Toreza Avenue, is the leading scientific and research institution for research into physiological, biochemical and structural bases of evolution of the functions within living organisms. It was established in 1956 on the initiative of L. A. Orbeli (a director in 1956-58) on the basis of the Laboratory of Evolutional Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR established in 1954. Since the beginning of the 1960s, research works in evolutional biochemistry, physiology of children’s higher nervous activity have been developed under the supervision of E. M. Kreps (a director in 1960-75). The institute develops research of cerebral circulation of the blood in the conditions of hyper-gravitation, water-salt metabolism etc. Research work concentrates on the evolution of the nervous system, including sensory systems, neurogenetics etc. The institute develops methods of mathematical modelling of rivers, lakes and oceanic ecosystems. The institute publishes the journal Zhurnal Evolyutsionnoy Biokhimii i Fiziologii since 1965.
