SAINT PETERSBURG SOCIETY OF ARTISTS, renamed into Petrograd Society of Artists in 1914. Founded in 1890 by artists working in the academic style, with full members such as A. D. Kivshenko, I. E. Krachkovsky, K. Y. Kryzhitsky, L. F. Lagorio, A. I. Meshchersky, and N. A. Samokish, with K. E. Makovsky, G. I. Semiradsky, and D. V. Grigorovich. Located at 12 Zverinskaya Street from 1908. Its major aim was the development and spread of arts in Russia. Members of the society were guided by European academic standards, painting ancient and allegoric stories, as well as salon portraits. Between 1891 and 1918, the society organised annual exhibitions at the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, at the Academy of Arts, and at the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg (Petrograd) and Moscow, and its public exhibitions at the Konnogvardeisky Manege, exhibitions in the country, and competitions between 1898 and 1901 were known as "the people's exhibitions." It also engaged in various public activities. A group of artists left the society in 1903 to establish the Association of Artists in 1904. The society existed until 1918.
