VEDENEEV ALL-RUSSIAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING, situated at 21 Gzhatskaya Street. It was founded in 1921 on the initiative of Professor G. K. Riesenkampf and N. N. Pavlovsky as a Scientific Land-Reclamation Institute for solving water-work construction issues. It was reorganised in 1931 and joined by a number of research organisations, the institute was renamed the Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering, it achieved All-Union status in 1940. It was named after B. E. Vedeneev, a member of the academy, in 1946. It received its present-day name in 1992. The institute provides research and development for power and hydraulic engineering. Based on research conducted by the institute, over 160 hydroelectric power plants were designed and constructed including Volkhovskaya, Dneprovskaya, Bratskaya, Krasnoyarskaya, Ust-Ilimskaya, and the coordinated systems of Svirskie and Volzhskie. The institute also studies reliability and safety of hydraulic and special structures, heating and nuclear power plants, earthquake-proof structures, offshore oil and gas extraction structures, environmental protection projects, and corrosive waste storage projects.
