Dmitry Mikhailovich Karbyshev (1830 – 1945), Lieutenant General, Hero of the Soviet Union, Military Engineer, Scientist, Professor, Doctor of Military Science. He graduated from the Siberian Cadet Corps, the Nikolayevskoye School of Military Engineering and the Nikolayevskaya Academy of Military Engineering. He took part in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 and the First World War. Lieutenant Colonel. He took part in the construction of the Brest Fortress (1911 – 1914). He was the Chief Engineer of the 5th army at the Eastern Front and an Assistant Chief Engineer at the Southern Front during the Patriotic War.
He was heavily contused and captured in the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. He was tortured and killed at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp in 1945.
