Benois Leonty (Ludovik) Nikolaevich (1856, Peterhof -1928, Leningrad), architect, full State Advisor (1905), an honourable cultural figure (1927). The son of N. L. Benois, a brother of Albert N. Benois and А. N. Benois. In 1879, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts. He taught at the School of Drawing of the Society of Encouragement of Artists (1879-84), and at the College of Civil Engineers (1884-92, 1920-27). He was an editor of the Arkhitector journal (1892-95). He was the associate member (1885) and a professor (1892), and, from 1893, a full member of the Academy of Fine Arts, as well as Architect of the Supreme Court (1899). He was a founder (1903) and an honourable member (1922-28) of the Society of Architectural Artists. He was professor and director of the studio (from 1893), a rector (1903-06, 1911-17) of the High School of Artists at the Academy of Fine Arts; a professor of Petrograd Free Educational Drawing Workshops (from 1918) (Among his students: V. G. Gelfreich, A. I. Dmitriev, N. E. Lansere, O. R. Munz, L. V. Rudnev, M. M. Peretyatkovich, V. A. Pokrovsky, I. A. Fomin, V. A. Shchuko and A. V. Shchusev, et al.). The works by Benois who was a representative of Eclecticism and Neoclassicism, are characterized by precise architectural composition, expressive silhouette, measured and solid artistic ensemble, inventive faculty and high skill in accomplishing the details. In St. Petersburg, he designed the following apartment houses: 39 Zagorodny Avenue, 79 Gorokhovaya Street, (1885-86); 27-29 Mokhovaya Street, (1897-98); 20 Third Line of Vasilievsky Island (1897-98, not implemented); 24 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue, 10 Bolshaya Monetnaya Street (1896-96); 57 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island, 15 Sixteenth Line of Vasilievsky Island); he also erected the buildings of the Court Chapel, buildings of administration of Russia insurance company (37 Bolshaya Morskaya Street, 1898-99), of the First Russian Insurance Society (40 Bolshaya Morskaya Street, 1899-1900); of the Otta Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; the Moscow Merchant Bank ( 46 Nevsky Prospect, 1901-02); the Roman Catholic church of the French Embassy; the Assembly Hall of the State Council in Mariinsky Palace (1907-08), the building of the State Printing Office ( 15 Chkalovsky Avenue/ 26 Gatchinskaya Street, 1908-10), of the Exhibition wing of the Museum of Russian Art (1914-19, with participation of S. O. Ovsyannikov) etc. In 1910-13, together with A. E. Enakiev, Peretyatkovich and Lansere, he developed the project for reconstructing St. Petersburg (not implemented). He lived in his own house on 20 Third Line of Vasilievsky Island (1899 - 1928). He was buried at Literatorskie mostki.
