Pobedy Square

POBEDY SQUARE located at the intersection of Moskovsky Avenue, Moskovskoe Freeway, Pulkovskoe Freeway and Krasnoputilovskaya Street, and Ordzhonikidze Street. Until 1962, it was called Srednaya Rogatka (after the outpost that had existed in this area since the 18th century). In the middle of the 18th century, the Srednerogatsky Palace was built (demolished in the 1960s). In 1945, a temporary wooden triumphal arch designed by architect A.I. Gegello was constructed to welcome victorious soldiers home. To a certain extent, the architecture of Pobedy Square was determined by the construction of the monument to Heroic Defenders of Leningrad. In 1973-75, 22-storied residential houses were built from large reinforced-concrete slabs in the north part of the square (architects S.B. Speransky and А.D. Katz, engineer N.I. Dyubov, et al.), later the trade esplanades of the Moskovsky Department Store (205 and 220 Moskovsky Avenue) were added to the ensemble. In 1981-83, the Pulkovskaya Hotel and the building of Elektronstandart Scientific Research Institute that is symmetrical to it were constructed in the west part of Pobedy Square (both by architects S.B. Speransky, V.S. Volonsevich, Finnish architect I. Vilyak; Polar construction firm). To the south-east of the square, the park of Heroes-Cities was laid out.
